Schoolboy given conditional discharge for using offensive words
A 17-year-old schoolboy told Magistrates’ Court he cursed at police officers because he was “just in a bad mood”.Rico Wells, of Devonshire, admitted using offensive words at police outside Paget Ice Queen on Monday. Crown counsel Robert Welling told the court that at 3.50am, uniformed police on patrol reported to a disturbance in the restaurant parking lot. Wells walked past them saying: “I’m not worried about police.”Wells then leaned against a car and, looking at them, said: “You police are all p*****s, you’re f****s.”He was arrested and taken to Hamilton Police Station. Wells appeared in court Thursday wearing a CedarBridge Academy uniform. He said he had been to a house party before Ice Queen, and had not been drinking.Senior Magistrate Archie Warner said: “You’ve got too many options; that’s why you figure you can just go out and do what you like.“If you don’t care, why should I care? I could give you ten days’ imprisonment and go have breakfast and not care either.”Wells said: “I was just in a bad mood at the time.”Mr Warner gave Wells a conditional discharge of 12 months and ordered him to complete 100 hours’ community service. Wells was also ordered to write a letter of apology to the Commissioner of Police.
