Five charged with trying to import $3.4m of drugs

Five men have been charged with attempting to bring $3.4 million of cannabis into Bermuda.One of the accused is a son of Progressive Labour Party Senator Cromwell Shakir.Senator Shakir could not be reached last night for comment.The five appeared yesterday in Magistrates' Court, escorted by eight police officers. Family members were among those present in the packed courtroom.Carlos Rogers, 41, of Somerset Road, Sandys; Kwesi Hollis, 36, of Harlem Heights, Hamilton Parish; Kinole Simons, 30, of Malabar Road, Sandys; Bilal Shakir, 39, of Sandys and Shaun Johnson, 27, of Parsons Road, Pembroke, appeared together before Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo.Mr Rogers and Mr Hollis were arrested Friday when they sailed the long-missing Carefree IV into Heritage Bay, St David's.The other three defendants were arrested earlier that morning. Marine police on patrol along North Shore intercepted their vessel, which was then brought into Penhurst Park Dock in Smith's.Their arrests came 52 days after the Carefree IV left the Dominican Republic for Bermuda. The yacht was the subject of a two-day search during storms in December, with Maritime Operations in Bermuda concerned as Mr Hollis and Mr Rogers were known to be inexperienced sailors.All five were charged yesterday with conspiring with others not present before the court to import the cannabis, and with bringing cannabis into the territorial waters of Bermuda with intent to supply, between an unknown date and January 21.Mr Johnson, Mr Simons and Mr Shakir were separately charged with handling the drugs. The matter will be tried in the Supreme Court.Larry Scott represented Mr Rogers, Elizabeth Christopher represented Mr Hollis and Shade Subair represented Mr Simons. Lawyers Charles Richardson and Marc Daniels represented Mr Shakir and Mr Johnson respectively.Each man was released on $30,000 bail with a like surety on the condition that they report three times a week to police. They were also ordered to surrender travel documents, with Mr Simons' mother handing in her son's passport in court.The five will next appear in Magistrates' Court on February 22.
