Man imprisoned for cannabis importation
A man who paid for his girlfriend to smuggle $22,000 worth of cannabis into Bermuda has been jailed for two years.Jason Fox, 35, gave Kezia DeSilva the money to pay for 447.5 grams of cannabis and her plane ticket from Canada to Bermuda.According to prosecutor Takiyah Burgess, Ms DeSilva, 23, was caught after she arrived at the LF Wade Airport in Bermuda on June 16 2010.A sniffer dog was alerted to her checked bag on the conveyor belt, and an official observed she was walking in an usual manner.DeSilva was searched and found to have two packages of cannabis strapped to her legs. She and Fox had arrived on the same WestJet flight from Toronto.Fox, who has dual Bermudian and Canadian nationality, walked through customs and immigration and exited the arrivals hall. However, he was escorted back by customs staff after it was discovered that the bag tag on DeSilva’s bag was in his name. He initially denied knowing her, telling officials: “There were a lot of Bermudians on the flight.”He refused to hand over documents in his possession. But when the police were called in, the documents were discovered to be the booking information for himself and Ms DeSilva on the WestJet flight. He then admitted they lived in the same town, Hamilton, Ontario, and explained that he denied knowing her at first because “I have a girl and I don’t want anyone to know.”He pleaded guilty to possession of cannabis with intent to supply on the morning his trial was due to begin last month.According to defence lawyer Eugene Johnston: “Mr Fox did know at the time he provided money and an airline ticket that Ms DeSilva intended to buy drugs and bring tham into the country.”He said Fox has a four year old son, and runs a renovation company in Canada.Prosecutor Robert Welling told Supreme Court during Fox’s plea hearing that Fox’s DNA was found on the inside and outside of the packets of drugs smuggled by Ms DeSilva. She was jailed for nine months last year for cannabis possession with intent to supply. According to Ms Burgess, she received a discounted sentence because she assisted the police in relation to Fox.He told the judge who sentenced him yesterday, Puisne Judge Carlisle Greaves: “I should have been a bigger and better man and taken the necessary steps to avoid this dilemma but I didn’t due to lust and love.”However, he said he wants to be a better man in future.“For my part, I am sorry to the courts and sorry to my fellow citizens of Bermuda,” he added.
