Lightbulb thief sent to jail
A homeless man was sentenced to one month in prison after he admitted stealing lights from an unlocked basement.Stephen Mills, 49, pleaded guilty in Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday to burglary.Crown counsel Carrington Mahoney said police on patrol in Hamilton saw Mills walking down Court Street around 12.35am on February 21.Mills was known to the officers from previous incidents. They stopped him and searched the bag he was carrying. Inside they found three boxes of Philips halogen lights.Mills told the officers he had found the bulbs outside the Salvation Army and had tried to sell them to Docksiders Pub and Captain’s Lounge, but officers noticed an invoice in the bag made out to Walter Brangman.Mr Brangman told officers the next morning that he had found the basement to his building shut, but not locked, and that three boxes of halogen lights had been removed.“I found the door open. Some people just leave the door open.“I didn’t know I was trespassing. I didn’t see any sign saying no trespassing. I took some boxes and left.”Magistrate Juan Wolffe sentenced Mills to one month in prison, asking him: “When you come out, are you going to steal some more?”“No sir,” Mills responded.lUseful website: www.bps.bm.
