18 months jail for mom of two who stole $35K from bank

Mum-of-two Justina Wilson (centre) has been jailed for stealing $35,000 during her bank employment.

A 24-year-old mother of two begged not to be sent to jail after admitting to stealing $35,000 to buy a Honda CR-V.However, Justina Wilson, of South Terrace, Pembroke, was sentenced in Magistrates’ Court to 18 months’ imprisonment for the offence. She has admitted to using her position as a bank teller in Capital G to take $35,000 from a client’s account with a false cheque on September 24.Wilson then made the cheque payable to a female acquaintance, who deposited the cheque in her account and withdrew a large amount of money. That same day, Wilson was given the compact SUV car.The bank client noticed the withdrawal on October 19 last year, and Capital G launched an internal inquiry. Surveillance cameras showed Wilson processing the suspect transactions, and the matter was referred to police. Wilson confessed to stealing the money on October 25.Crown counsel Kirsty-Ann Keillor asked the court for an immediate 12 to 18 month custodial sentence.Wilson broke down in tears as she pleaded with Magistrate Juan Wolffe. “It won’t be me getting a sentence, it will be my children as well,” she said.“I don’t want my children to grow up thinking I abandoned them. I tried to reverse the transaction but I couldn’t at the time.”Defence lawyer Kenville Savoury asked for a suspended sentence, telling the court: “In a strange way, (she) was trying to do the right thing by her children. She was desperately in need of transportation, had tried to make application for a loan which was denied, and she felt pressured by the party who sold the car to her constantly calling and asking if she wanted to purchase it.”Wilson has two sons, aged two and five. However, Mr Wolffe told Wilson she had held a high position of trust at the bank, which had been forced to repay the $35,000, and whose reputation could have suffered damage from the offence. He gave Wilson an immediate custodial sentence of nine months, with the car to be forfeited to help pay for her offence.Wilson must make restitution for the rest of the money within one year of being released from custody.
