Three men fined in court for having drugs

Three men have been fined in Magistrates’ Court for separate cannabis offences. Each admitted to possession of the drug.A 35-year-old Pembroke man was ordered to pay $1,000 for carrying one joint. According to Crown counsel Takiyah Burgess, a motorcycle was stopped for search by police on Queen Street at 12.40am, October 23.Noticing an odour of burnt cannabis, they searched Ian DeSilva, of Till’s Hill, and arrested him after finding a hand rolled cigarette of plant material in his pocket. It was found to be 0.5 grams of cannabis. The court then heard that police at the junction of Reid Street and Queen Street were conducting stops in anticipation of violence at 12.25am on December 5.A motorcycle driven by Mikael Ming, 22, of Brighton Hill Road, in Devonshire, was stopped. Ming appeared nervous, and was arrested after a search uncovered a plastic bag in his pocket, containing what appeared to be cannabis. It was found to be 0.6 grams of the drug.Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner fined him $1,000 for the offence.Ms Burgess said that on December 4, police were conducting a stop and search for weapons on Reid Street. At 11.35pm they approached Tekle Ming, who was walking along the street. Police noticed he seemed nervous, and kept his hand in his jacket pocket.In Ming’s pocket was a plastic bag with three small bags, each containing plant material, and he was arrested. It was found to be 4.4 grams of cannabis, for which Mr Warner fined Ming $800.
