Man, 63, fined $1,800 after admitting he had cannabis

A Warwick man was fined after he admitted possessing cannabis on Elliott Street.Gladstone Eve, 63, pleaded guilty to possessing cannabis in an increased penalty zone less than 300 metres from the Dellwood School.Crown counsel Cindy Clarke said plainclothes police were sitting in an unmarked car on Elliott Street when they noticed a second vehicle parked on the same street last December 21.The officers saw a man enter the back seat of the car. He appeared to engage in some form of transaction before stepping out of the car and walking away. The officers followed the car as it drove away, and pulled it over. They noted the driver appeared “overly friendly and nervous”.A search of the vehicle revealed a brown paper twist in Eve’s pocket, later confirmed to contain 0.3g of cannabis.Eve pleaded guilty to the possession of the drugs, but objected to assertions by the Crown that he had purchased the cannabis.“The police try to add on stuff,” he said. “I never bought anything. There was no transaction taking place.”Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner replied: “You don’t have to tell me where you got it from, but you admitted that you had it.”Mr Warner fined Eve $800 for possessing the cannabis and added an additional $1,000 for having it in an increased penalty zone.
