Court gears up for move

The old Magistrates’ Court building will officially close this week as the operation moves to the new Dame Lois Browne-Evans Building next week.Throughout this week, all administrative offices at the old building will close at 1pm, except the cashiers’ office, which remains open for regular business hours, according to an advert placed by Government in the Bermuda Sun.On Friday this week and Monday next week, no courts will be in session apart from plea court and the civil courts. The construction of the new building has been dogged by controversy, missing its scheduled opening date of August, 2010 and costing $26 million more than initially expected. However, Works Minister Derrick Burgess has said it will have full occupancy this month. It’s not known what will happen to the old court building and Police station, with Minister of Government Estates and Information Neletha Butterfield telling The Royal Gazette several Government offices which now become vacant are in need of repairs before anybody moves into them.
