Sandys teenager fined $2,000 for having cannabis

A Sandys teenager was ordered to pay more than $2000 after she admitted having marijuana in an increased penalty zone.Shariykah Muhammad, 18, pleaded guilty to possessing cannabis on Hook and Ladder Lane.The site is within 300m of the Somerset Cricket Club grounds and several West End schools. Crown counsel Tawana Tannock said officers were on duty in the area last October 26.They noticed Muhammad with two other men, one of whom officers had reason to speak with.One of the men ran as the officers approached. Police were able to speak with Muhammad and the other man.A search of their motorcycle produced a purse which had a hand-rolled cigarette and plant material inside.Asked about the items, Muhammad told officers: “They don’t belong to me.”Lab tests later showed the plant material to be 1.2g of cannabis.Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner fined Muhammad $800 for possession, and another $1,500 for having a controlled drug in an increased penalty zone.
