Biker fined and banned from road after causing a head-on collision

A 23-year-old Paget man who caused a head-on collision has been banned from the roads.Marcus Kevin Astwood, of Sylvan Dell Road, pleaded guilty when he appeared in Magistrates’ Court to dangerous driving causing bodily harm to Yuvaraj Shanmugan.Astwood told Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner that he could only remember waking up in hospital after the crash.The court heard from Crown counsel Takiyah Burgess than on April 24 last year, at 4.45am, Mr Shanmugan was driving his motorcycle east on South Road near the Paget traffic lights, when he encountered Astwood, travelling west on a bike and driving in the wrong lane.Astwood sustained minor facial injuries when the two vehicles struck, but Mr Shanmugan received multiple facial fractures, plus a fracture to the base of his skull.Both men were taken to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital, but the victim had to be flown on for emergency treatment in the US.Mr Warner fined Astwood $1,000, and disqualified him from driving for 24 months.
