Policeman was directed to alleged gunman’s hat
A stranger in a crowd at the scene of a fatal shooting on Court Street told police where to find a hat allegedly dropped by a gunman.According to prosecutors, the baseball cap was later linked by DNA to a man accused of the killing, David Cox.Mr Cox, 31, was named by eyewitness Michael Parsons yesterday as one of the men who opened fire on Raymond (Yankee) Rawlins [see main story].Mr Rawlins, 47, died after being shot 16 times as he walked into Mr Parsons’ birthday party at the Spinning Wheel nightclub at 12.23am on August 9 2010.After Mr Parsons’ evidence, the jury heard from Pc Terry Trott, an armed police officer on duty that night. He arrived at the scene 13 minutes after the shooting. A large crowd was gathered on the street and the balcony of the Spinning Wheel.“Some of the members of the crowd were shouting that the police were too late and other members of the crowd were shouting that the shooting took place in the area of the Spinning Wheel nightclub,” said Pc Trott.“I immediately drove up into the area of the Spinning Wheel nightclub.“Once outside Spinning Wheel I exited the police vehicle and at that time I heard someone that I can’t identify shout out that there was a hat and a cloth lying in the road and that that hat and cloth belonged to the person who’s responsible for the shooting.”Pc Trott said the black baseball cap had NY 59FIFTY written on the front and the cloth was orange microfibre. He put the items into evidence bags, placed them in his car, then answered a call on the police radio for assistance at the hospital. The jury has heard from other witnesses that Mr Rawlins was taken to the hospital in a private car but succumbed to his injuries.Mr Cox denies premeditated murder and using a firearm to commit murder and the case continues.
