US visitor fined $2,500 for cannabis possession

Bringing cannabis into Bermuda cost a US visitor $2,500 in Magistrates’ Court.Cruise ship passenger Michael Montelli said he took the ten grams of cannabis onto the ship for his own use.The 36-year-old said cannabis was decriminalised in his home state of Connecticut.Police were called by Bermuda Customs to a cruise ship in Dockyard last week.A partially-smoked quantity of cannabis, weighing ten grams, was found in Montelli’s cabin.He told Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner: “I want to apologise for being disrespectful.”After warning him that the offence carried a maximum sentence of ten years’ imprisonment at his court, Mr Warner fined Montelli $2,500, to be paid forthwith.
