Man fined $3,000 for having cannabis near preschool

A 22-year-old Pembroke man was fined $3,000 after he was caught with cannabis in an increased penalty zone.Julian Washington pleaded guilty in Magistrates’ Court to two counts of cannabis possession. Washington, who is currently in Westgate prison on other charges, admitted the offence after he was caught with cannabis and cannabis resin on May 9.Crown counsel Takiyah Burgess told the court that at 10.15am, police attended St Monica’s Road in response to a report of drug use.They found three men in the yard of a residence. Washington was apprehended after he picked up an object and attempted to run away. A Government analyst determined the plastic bag contained 1.1 grams of cannabis, and 0.1 grams of the resin.Because he had been caught within 300 metres of the Creative Touch Playschool, Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner fined Washington $1,500 for each offence.
