Kevin Brown, the doctor son of former Premier Ewart Brown, has been sentenced to 12-and-a-half-years in state prison for sexually assaulting nine female patients.Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Michael Pastor sentenced the 40-year-old yesterday, saying he preyed upon vulnerable patients. The judge also ordered him to pay more than $13,000 in restitution, according to an Associated Press report.The disgraced doctor was found guilty in August of more than 20 counts, including sexual battery, sexual exploitation and committing a lewd act. A jury deadlocked on eight other charges.Prosecutors say he attacked 11 patients over five years at three of his clinics under the guise of breast and pelvic examinations. Among his victims were a 15-year-old girl and an undercover police officer.One of the women testified before sentencing that she went into deep depression and had flashbacks when he sexually assaulted her in April 2008.The doctor “ripped my life apart and shattered my confidence in myself and my judgment of others by molesting me in his office and forcibly raping me in my own home,” she said.The doctor had been facing a maximum sentence of 16 years and ten months in state prison. He had been acquitted in 2004 and 2006 of similar charges. However, he denied any wrongdoing and told the hearing he is not a sexual deviant.“I know who I am,” he told the court. “I am not the man they made up.”He first hit the headlines in Bermuda in May 2008 over charity fundraisers he organised at the Playboy Mansion to raise funds for his charity, the Urban Health Institute. His father and then-Premier Ewart Brown attended one of the events and handed out prizes, including three donated by the Tourism Ministry.His father was at yesterday's hearing, according to the Associated Press, which reported that other family members and former patients “had glowing remarks about the physician”.Kevin Brown is the eldest of Ewart Brown's sons. The second-eldest, Maurice Pitt, 29, has been released from prison after serving a sentence for armed bank robbery.
