Deodorant thief is jailed

A Sandys man with a history of theft was sentenced to six months in prison after he admitted shoplifting.Randolph Simons, 46, pleaded guilty to stealing four sticks of Degree deodorant and six tubes of Axe Body Spray from the Heron Bay Market Place on June 16.According to Crown counsel Nicole Smith, that afternoon staff at the store alerted manager Hector Santiago that they believed Simons had stolen items from the store.Mr Santiago approached Simons outside the store, but Simons refused to be searched and ran down Middle Road.At around 2.45pm, Police arrived at the scene and saw Simons walking up a set of stairs nearby carrying a plastic bag. They stopped him and found that the bag contained multiple containers of deodorant, which Simons claimed he owned. The price tags on the items matched the price tags used by the Heron Bay Market Place, and Simons was arrested.Pleading guilty in Magistrates’ Court, Simons apologised, telling the court: “I wasn’t working and I did a desperate thing I regret today.”He told the court that he had tried stealing “once or twice before”, but Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo said that was a “perfect understatement,” noting a long list of prior offences.“You like stealing, but you are not very good at it,” Mr Tokunbo said.“Apparently not,” Simons replied.Mr Tokunbo sentenced Simons to six months’ imprisonment.
