Woman crashed after taking uninsured bike

A woman yesterday admitted riding a stolen, unlicensed and uninsured bike following a traffic accident.Ashanti Smith Francis, 22, pleaded guilty in Magistrates’ Court to taking a vehicle without the owner’s consent, along with driving without a licence, and riding a vehicle that was unlicensed and uninsured.According to Crown counsel Susan Mulligan, on June 29 last year officers received a report of a pregnant woman being involved in a collision seeking medical treatment at the Lamb-Foggo Urgent Care Centre, in St David’s.Speaking to the investigating officer, Smith asked about recovering the motorcycle which she was riding at the time of the collision. When officers went to recover the vehicle, they realised that based on its licence plates, the vehicle licence had expired in 2009.The officers also noticed that based on the licencing information the vehicle should be yellow, it was actually white. They then checked the vehicle’s engine and discovered that the licence plate did not belong to the vehicle, and the cycle had been reported stolen in October 2010.Elizabeth Christopher, representing Smith, said that her client didn’t know the vehicle was stolen, and was only borrowing it for the day when she was involved in the collision.“This joyride ended up being very expensive,” Ms Christopher said. “She ended up in the hospital for one, and she has ended up with several fines. It was really just bad karma that followed her.”Ms Christopher asked the court for leniency for the charge of taking a vehicle without consent, noting that she is due to give birth in less than a month and the fines related to the other offences would prove punishment enough.Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo issued Smith a six-month conditional discharge for taking a vehicle without consent, and fined her a total of $1,750 for the other offences.
