Woman stole $27,000 from estranged husband

A mother-of-four who admitted stealing $27,000 from her estranged husband and his girlfriend was last week given a suspended prison sentence.Chandray Abrahams, 34, of Rambling Lane, Pembroke, pleaded guilty to one count of theft, but said the money went towards caring for her children, two of whom were fathered by the complainant. In October, Crown counsel Nicole Smith told Magistrates’ Court that the defendant’s husband, Kevin Abrahams, had asked his wife to transfer money into her account while he was in Jamaica with his girlfriend, Beverley Davis.Ms Smith said that while Mr Abrahams had asked for $5,000 to be transferred, the defendant instead deliberately transferred $27,000.Attorney Shade Subair, representing the defendant, told the court that Mr Abrahams has asked $2,700 to be transferred, but the defendant accidentally added an additional zero, then failed to advise him of the mistake or attempt to rectify it.The money was reportedly used to pay outstanding debts, including hospital bills. On Thursday, the court heard that given Abrahams current living situation, she does not earn enough to pay for restitution.Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo said that while Abrahams can’t pay back the stolen money now, she would not go unpunished, sentencing her to 15 months’ imprisonment, suspended for three years. He additionally sentenced her to three years probation, and ordered her to return to court next January so that her ability to repay the stolen money can be re-evaluated.
