Stiff fines handed out for driving offences
Driving while disqualified proved costly for a 45-year-old St George’s man who gave authorities the name of another man already wanted by police.Prinston Robinson admitted the January 14 offence when he appeared in Magistrates’ Court. He also pleaded guilty to having no license for an auxiliary cycle, no third party insurance, and making a false statement. The court heard that Robinson was stopped that day on Harbour Road at 9.45pm, by police conducting license checks. Robinson had no license, and was arrested after the name he gave turned out to have an apprehension warrant.“It was a one-time thing,” Robinson told Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner, saying he had been called out to help his mother.Robinson was given a month to pay fines of $500 for driving while disqualified, plus a total of $1,750 for the other traffic offences. He was also ordered to pay immediately $1,800 in additional traffic fines from last year. Also in custody was a 31-year-old Southampton man who admitted driving while three times over the legal limit of blood alcohol. The court heard that police on Middle Road, Paget, stopped Marco Peixoto’s car on January 16, after he failed to stop at the junction with South Road.A breath test found 239 milligrams of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood. The legal limit is 80 milligrams.Mr Warner fined Peixoto $1,000, and banned him from driving for one year.
