Murder victim’s father breaks down in tears
The grieving father of murder victim Shaki Crockwell broke down in tears at Supreme Court while giving evidence yesterday.Danny Crockwell, 51, told the jury: “It’s hard; it’s the hardest thing I have ever done.”Later, when defence lawyer Mark Pettingill quizzed him over encounters he had with the alleged killer, Derek Spalding, Mr Crockwell told the lawyer: “You guys don’t know what I’m going through to have to go through all this again. It’s not going to bring him back.”Mr Pettingill told the witness he was “deeply sorry for that” but explained he had a duty to ask questions on behalf of his client.Mr Crockwell Sr was finishing evidence he began on Friday. Earlier, he’d explained that he met Mr Spalding one day when he came to his house to talk to his son.He heard his son and Mr Spalding talking about some money, but did not pay any heed to the conversation.Prosecutors allege Mr Spalding shot Mr Crockwell Jr, 25, because he owed him money for drugs.He was found dead from a gunshot wound to the head on the Railway Trail in Devonshire on the night of August 24, 2007.Mr Crockwell Sr said some time after the murder, he had a conversation with Mr Spalding where Mr Spalding told him he was not the killer, and claimed he was related to the Crockwell family.“I’m a Crockwell; he’s a Spalding, he is not related to me,” Mr Crockwell Sr told the jury yesterday.“He is not related to me. That’s what he’s trying to make it look like, so he can clear himself.”Convicted bank robber Randy Lightbourne, who was friends with the victim and Mr Spalding from their days in prison together, told the jury last week that Mr Spalding confessed the murder to him.Mr Lightbourne told the jury he knew the victim and his father well.Mr Crockwell confirmed that he knows Mr Lightbourne, and his brother Roger Lightbourne, from footballing circles.He described them as “good boys”.Mr Spalding, 36, of Pembroke, denies premeditated murder and using a firearm to commit that crime.
