Cannabis, grinders earn Devonshire man $2,000 in fines

A Devonshire man in Magistrates’ Court admitted having cannabis and multiple grinders after police discovered the items in a search of his home.Anthony Smith, 27, of Chain Gate Hill, pleaded guilty to possessing the controlled drug and drug equipment.Crown counsel Nicole Smith said Smith was arrested on June 15 in connection with another matter not before the courts.Following his arrests, officers conducted a PACE search of the home and found three transparent parcels containing plant material in a dresser drawer. Officers also discovered three silver grinders on a night stand.Lab tests revealed trace quantities of cannabis on all three grinders, and found the parcels contained 6.6g of the controlled drug, worth as much as $325 on the streets of Bermuda.Questioned by police, Smith admitted the drugs and grinders were his, saying: “I planted the cannabis at the back of my mother’s house. It was for my personal use.”Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner fined Smith $1,000 for the drugs and another $1,000 for the grinders, giving him one month to pay the fines.
