Couple recover jewellery after detective work

A couple who lost $1,400 of jewellery in a burglary managed to trace it when they contacted a “cash for gold” store.Their detective work resulted in a student being brought to court, where he admitted dishonestly receiving the jewellery.The court heard that three rings and three bracelets were stolen from the couple who live on Lynwood Drive, Hamilton Parish, on March 16.According to Crown counsel Garrett Byrne, they made contact with a cash for gold store where the items were found. Dejuan Somner, 20, of Hamilton Parish, was recognised as the person who brought in the jewellery.He was arrested on March 22 and appeared in court on Thursday, where he was charged with burgling the house and dishonestly receiving the jewellery. He denied the burglary but admitted the receiving charge. Mr Byrne said the burglary charge would remain on file.According to defence lawyer Leo Mills, Somner is studying information technology in Halifax, Nova Scotia.Somner told the court he lives with his mother and his grandmother. However, Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner expressed concern that no family members were in court to support the young defendant.He gave Somner $5,000 bail until April 12 when a date will be fixed for his sentence. Mr Warner also imposed a 9pm to 6am curfew as a condition of the bail.
