Prowling teenager had a combat knife
A teenager was caught prowling around a property with a combat knife after allegedly committing a burglary, a court heard.Joshua Usher, 18, of Mount Hill, Pembroke, denied committing the break-in at an upper apartment on Seagull Lane, Pembroke. Jewellery worth $4,600 was stolen. However, he admitted prowling around a lower apartment at Seagull Lane on the same date and possessing a combat knife with a blade of four inches. He also pleaded guilty to dishonestly receiving a black laptop computer on January 18 which was stolen in a different burglary.Crown counsel Garrett Byrne explained that police found the laptop at Usher’s home after he was taken into custody on another matter.Mr Byrne went on to explain that Usher came to the attention of a man who lives on Seagull Lane who spotted him prowling around his home in the early hours of Tuesday April 3.Usher knocked on the man’s front door, but the man did not answer. Then he went to the side of the house before coming back to the front and knocking again. The police were called, and Usher told them: “I’m looking for my friend Jeremiah.”They found he had jewellery with him that had allegedly been stolen from the upper apartment. He also had a combat knife, and told police: “I had it for my own protection,” according to Mr Garrett. When he appeared in court on Thursday, however, Usher told Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner: “I was using it to carve out something. I used it to carve out a cedar rose.”When the incredulous Magistrate asked: “At 1.30am?”, Usher added: “I was returning it because my grandmother didn’t approve of me having it but I met someone and got sidetracked.”Usher, who appeared in the dock with his arm in a sling, told the magistrate he lives with his grandmother. When Mr Warner asked why no family members were present at his court appearance, he said his parents were at work and his grandmother had another commitment.Mr Warner remanded him into custody until May 1 when he will stand trial for the burglary charge. He will also be sentenced for the rest of the crimes on the same date.
