Chef who stole from employer given conditional discharge

A former MarketPlace chef was given a conditional discharge for stealing food while employed at the grocery store.Kervan Harvey, 51, of Deep Dale, Pembroke, pleaded guilty to one count of theft, committed on March 7.The court heard that Harvey attempted to leave the Hamilton store carrying a brown paper bag containing $69.75 of food items around 6.45pm on March 7.Managers challenged him and he was unable to produce a receipt for the items.Harvey, who had worked at the grocery store for around 14 years, was subsequently fired.Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner said the loss of a long-term job was “substantial punishment” and that, given the circumstances, imposing a conviction would be unfair. He released Harvey with a 12-month conditional discharge. As long as the defendant commits no further offences no conviction will be recorded against him.
