Pair fined after Police warned them for offensive language
Two men were arrested for cursing at police officers at Western Stars Club in Pembroke.Isak Hilgard, 31, and Shennon Gilbert, 46, pleaded guilty to using offensive language.Gilbert also pleaded guilty to violently resisting arrest.Magistrates’ Court heard that officers responded to a loud music complaint at the club around 3.30am on May 20.It was the second complaint of the night; the officers closed the facility and told patrons to leave.As they did so, they heard Hilgard say: “F*** cops. Leave us the f*** alone. There are real people killing each other out there. F*** you.”The officers warned the Sandys parish man against using offensive language, but Hilgard went into a “fighting stance” and continued to swear.Because of the defendant’s threatening behaviour, the officers used Captor spray to detain and arrest him.Gilbert meanwhile approached officers, telling them: “F*** you. Leave the guy alone. F*** you.”The officers attempted to arrest the Pembroke resident. He immediately began to struggle and grabbed one officer by the neck and pushed him into a wall before he was subdued.Gilbert continued to curse at the officers after he was arrested, saying: “F*** you.”Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner fined Hilgard $800 for using offensive words. Gilbert was fined $600 for offensive words and $600 for resisting arrest.Both men were ordered to pay their fines immediately, or face imprisonment.
