A pair of brothers and a female accomplice robbed two friends at knifepoint as they were waiting to buy drugs, a jury heard.Zharrin Simmons, Ezra Ararat and Ezra Williams are alleged to have stolen a cellphone and jewellery from Kenneth Williams, 22, and Victoria Decoute, 17.The trio were alleged to have been armed with a knife and machete at the time of the crime in Hermitage Road, Devonshire.According to prosecutor Garrett Byrne, Kenneth Williams suffered an eight-inch wound to his calf and Ms Simmons, 20, accidentally sliced Ezra Williams, 27, with a machete. The crime happened around 8.30pm-8.45pm on August 27 2011 when the victims were sitting in a parked car with the windows down near the hardware store S.A.L.Mr Byrne explained that the victims were friends, and Ms Decoute’s mother was in a relationship with Kenneth Williams’ father.“As with many young people in Bermuda, these were two people who wanted to smoke some marijuana, and they were there in order to buy some,” said the prosecutor. He urged the jury to put aside any “strong feelings” they may have about the use of marijuana.“Even if you consider that they showed poor judgement in doing that, at the end of the day they did not deserve what then happened to them as they sat in the car,” he said.“Out of the shadows arrived three people the defendants all on foot, coming from the other side of the road.”Mr Byrne said Ezra Williams took a kitchen-style knife with a five or six inch blade from his pocket and began stabbing Kenneth Williams in his head and chest. The victim tried to disarm his attacker, at which point Ezra Ararat, 25, started punching him in the head.Ezra Williams searched Kenneth Williams’ pockets and stole a cell phone. Meanwhile Ms Decoute got out of the car and tried to help her friend.“It was then that Zharrin Simmons arrived on the scene and hit Ms Decoute over the eye, snatched the gold chains from around her neck and took a bracelet from her,” said Mr Byrne.“Kenneth Williams was by now out of the car. Zharrin Simmons went to attack Kenneth Williams with a machete but missed, and Ms Simmons actually struck the defendant Ezra Williams on the hand. Mr Williams got quite a nasty cut on his hand.”The robbers ran off and local residents helped the victims, who were taken to hospital. Ms Decoute was treated for cuts and bruises and discharged.Mr Williams was kept in for four days for treatment to his calf wound. While the victims were waiting to be seen by a doctor, Ms Decoute spotted Ms Simmons and Ezra Williams and recognised them as two of the robbers, according to the prosecutor. The suspects realised they had been spotted and fled, but police arrested Mr Williams on nearby Berry Hill Road. They arrested his brother later that night and Ms Simmons two days later.Police found a trail of blood leading from the scene of the crime to Mr Ararat’s home in nearby Boundary Crescent. They found blood and a knife inside the house, a machete hidden in a hole in a wall outside and clothing behind a dog kennel in the yard. The machete handle was wrapped in a page torn out of a pornographic magazine found inside the house, according to Mr Byrne. The defendants were interviewed after their arrests. Ezra Williams exercised his right to silence and Ms Simmons said she was never at the scene.Mr Ararat said he was on his way home from a shop when he saw two people attacking his brother on Hermitage Road. He told police he tried to help and pushed a girl away, but someone chopped him with a machete. The victims positively identified all three defendants during identification parades.Mr Ararat, of Devonshire, and Ms Simmons and Mr Williams, both of Pembroke, deny robbery and the case is set to continue on Friday.
