Drunk student gets year-long ban for foul-mouthed tirade

A drunk student who launched a foul-mouthed tirade at police during a traffic stop has been fined more than $2,000 and banned from driving for a year.Raymond Raynor, 20, was more than twice over the legal limit when he was pulled over by officers outside Snorkel Park in Dockyard in the early hours of the morning on Friday, July 6.Initially stopped near the junction of Somerset Road and Scotts Hill because he had an expired licence sticker, Raynor became increasingly offensive as he was questioned by the two officers.During the conversation, Raynor told officers: “You cops are stupid.“I’m going to be straight up. You guys are p******. You are f***ing weird. I will find out who you are.”The officers then asked Raynor if he had been drinking, and he responded: “Yes, I was f****** drinking. I just came from Snorkel. Didn’t you guys just see me up there?”He agreed to give officers samples of his breath, which revealed a lower reading of 174mg of blood in 100ml of alcohol, more than double the legal limit of 80mg.The University of Kent student pleaded guilty in Magistrates’ Court yesterday to using offensive words, driving while impaired, and operating a vehicle that was both unlicensed and uninsured.Appearing in court, Raynor initially denied swearing at the officer, saying: “He was offensive to me. The officer had a problem with me.”Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner responded: “Yeah, he had a problem with you. You were drunk.”Raynor later changed his plea, admitting using offensive words towards the officer, and apologised for the incident.Mr Warner fined Raynor $500 for his language, $800 for driving while impaired, and a total of $750 for driving a vehicle that was unlicensed and uninsured. He also disqualified him from driving all vehicles for one year.
