Teen remanded for bail violation

A teenager accused of a string of burglaries breached his curfew and went to a beach party, a prosecutor alleged.Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner revoked 18-year-old Tahj Robinson’s bail and remanded him into custody after hearing of the problems.Defence lawyer Dante Williams explained that Robinson was bailed and given an electronic monitoring tag in May, having been on remand at Westgate since his arrest in December. He said Robinson wore the tag 24-hours-a-day until Friday, when he went to the police station around 10pm to report that it was loose.According to Mr Williams, Robinson was given a replacement and told he had an hour to return to his home to comply with the curfew which formed part of his bail conditions.“He was unable to get to his home within the allotted time period that the officer gave him. He was therefore held in breach. This is the only breach in respect of this matter,” said Mr Williams. However, prosecutor Larissa Burgess gave a different version of events. She told Mr Warner that on Friday, the company monitoring the electronic tag “noted that the defendant was in violation” and invited him to come in to have it replaced around 10.30pm.A short time afterwards, the tag indicated that he was at Horseshoe Bay and not at his home — in breach of his curfew. There was a party at the beach at the time, according to Ms Burgess.“He did not return to his residence until 2.10am,” she reported. “That was way past any one hour period he had to return to his residence.”Robinson admitted he did not go straight home, and did go to the beach, but said he was back at his residence by 12.40am.He has two trials pending for burglary-related charges, today, and in August.Mr Warner said “his bail for all matters is revoked”, and sent Robinson back to Westgate.
