A 37-year-old said he was forced to pull out a knife to defend himself against “drunk and belligerent” ferry-riders.Edwin Trott Wolffe, whose address is not known, admitted to brandishing a knife at Hamilton Ferry Terminal on Sunday afternoon.Wolffe told the court he was travelling with his son and godson and that he did not throw the first punch.Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner remanded Wolffe into custody and will sentence him on October 11.Prosecutor Carrington Mahoney told the court that police were called to the terminal after Wolffe pulled the knife and saw him brandishing it.After entering a guilty plea in court, Wolffe said: “(The knife) was for my own protection.”Trott Wolffe explained that he, his son and his godson were waiting for the 4pm ferry when another ferry docked and a group of “foreigners” came off the ferry and within “five minutes” were “pressing” Wolffe.Wolffe told the court that the people offloading the ferry started the altercation with him by issuing the first swing.“It didn’t take long (for an altercation to ensue),” said the defendant. “(The foreigners) were drunk and belligerent.”The defendant also said that “he wasn’t having that” because he was with his son and godson.
