The police told Hughes to desist, but he did not.Hughes said to the police: “ You think I f**king care, I don’t give a f**k. You don’t think I know your f**king bosses, you f**king police. F**k you.”The police asked the defendant for his name, and he replied: “Joshua Hughes”.Hughes was escorted to Hamilton Police Station where he was formally charged for using offensive words. In court, Hughes offered an explanation for his actions. He explained that the police at first gripped him and pushed him down onto the ground as he was walking out of the party.“The police pushed me and I used offensive words,” said Hughes. The defendant told the court that he was at a party at the Bermuda College when the incident occurred and said that the police were “just randomly searching people.”When Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner asked whether the defendant had all his faculties with him the night of the incident, Hughes admitted to having had a few drinks.“You were drinking, weren’t you,” said Mr Warner.“Yeah,” Hughes replied.Defence lawyer Susan Moore-Williams requested a conditional discharge for Hughes, explaining that he entered an early guilty plea and that the defendant will be attending school abroad soon to better himself.“I’ve learned my lesson, sir,” Hughes told the Magistrate.Mr Warner told Hughes: “When you’re out at night and you see these kinds of ruckuses going on, you should walk the other way.”He added: “If you can’t handle yourself with drinks, then you should leave drinks alone.”Mr Warner gave Hughes a conditional discharge.
