Homeless man admits having stolen cellpone

A 59-year-old homeless man admitted to dishonestly receiving a smartphone when he appeared in Magistrates’ Court.Vincent McDonald Pitt pleaded guilty to receiving a stolen Samsung Galaxy Note smartphone.Prosecutor Cindy Clarke told the court that the complainant had her purse stolen while she was on the porch at The Bistro at the Beach bar, on Front Street, in August.The handbag was later found in the bushes of a car park near Victoria Street with the contents missing.The complainant’s wallet, which contained $75 cash and her ATM cards, as well as a black Samsung Galaxy Note smartphone were missing. The smartphone retails between $549 and $859 in Bermuda.The handbag was turned in to the police and the smartphone was later recovered at AudioVisual electronics in Somerset.An employee at the electronics repair shop explained that someone had brought in the smartphone for repair. The phone’s model number matched that of the complainant’s missing phone.In court, the defendant seemed unsure of his charges. He explained that he did not steal the complainant’s handbag or the smartphone because he is banned from frequenting The Beach bar.“You’re not charged for theft,” explained Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo.“You’re charged for receiving [the phone].”Ms Clarke also noted that the defendant had previous dishonesty convictions.Pitt pleaded guilty in 2005 to stealing multiple Royal Gazette newspapers, several half gallons of milk and pints of chocolate milk, croissants and chocolate muffins throughout the month of February.Regarding the smartphone matter, Mr Tokunbo ordered a social inquiry report and set the case to November 15 for sentencing.Pitt was remanded in custody until then.
