Woman who stole grandma’s jewellery is jailed

A “personality disorder” caused a 24-year-old to steal nearly $10,000 in jewellery from her grandmother and say it was burgled, a lawyer claimed.Saul Dismont told Magistrates’ Court Aeisha Place was in need of treatment because of her “antisocial behaviour” magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo jailed the mother-of-two for six months.Place also admitted giving a false statement to police and stealing her grandmother’s debit card last October, spending $226.87 on groceries, pizza and gas.Mr Dismont requested a conditional discharge for his client although he conceded he was making “a rare and unusual” application. He noted Place’s “lack of empathy” and asked that a probation order accompany the discharge, effectively forcing her to attend court-mandated counselling.“It’s clear that Ms Place does not appreciate that there’s an issue to be dealt with,” he added. However Mr Tokunbo said he had no intention of granting a conditional discharge Place already received one for another dishonesty offence. She got two years’ probation last year for stealing $913 from her employers, toy store Daisy and Mac.In that case, Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner branded her “delusional” after she falsely claimed to have paid the money back to store owner Dawn Zuill.Place claimed then she’d needed the money to pay for her daughter’s nursery school fees.Crown counsel Larissa Burgess noted Place had made a similar claim regarding her more recent offence against Pearline Place, the grandmother who raised her since childhood.Place was looking after her grandmother’s Hamilton Parish home while she was on holiday. She said she stole and cashed in the jewellery “in order to feed herself and her baby”, Ms Burgess said. Her grandmother told social workers there were plenty of supplies in the house.Place summoned police to the Winton Hill Lane residence on May 22 claiming a burglar took jewellery valued at $9,819 from a safe.Sceptical officers challenged her story, and Place admitted she had taken it to cash-for-gold stores. Not all of the rings, pendants, gold chains and earrings were recovered.Place was charged with making a false statement to police as well as theft. In court, Place’s stepmother offered to give her a home if she would agree to undergo counselling.Place, who was wearing an orange prison jumpsuit, told the court: “I’m sorry for what I done. I wrote my nana an apology letter.”Mr Tokunbo said: “The worst people you could be stealing from are those who are caring for you and providing shelter. You’re building up a criminal history for yourself — crimes of dishonesty. This time, you have actually served time in prison.”He added: “You have had a taste of it, and I hope you found that taste unpleasant.”He sentenced her to six months’ imprisonment for stealing, and one month for the false statement to be served concurrently. Her time in custody was taken into account Place has been in jail since May 23, unable to make $5,000 bail.Place was given four months for each of the seven dishonesty offences from October 2011 — stealing her grandmother’s Butterfield Bank card and using it six times at MarketPlace, the Phoenix Store, Citi Cafe and Upper Crust Pizza.Mr Tokunbo ordered those sentences to run concurrently as well. That means Place will be released in a month to start 18 months’ probation and supervised counselling. She was also ordered to live with her stepmother. Her first court appointment is November 30, with monthly reviews to follow.“Get your act together,” Mr Tokunbo warned her.
