A chef who crashed his car and then reported it stolen was found by police with the keys in his pocket.Jahmeko Virgil, 25, from My Lord's Bay Road, pleaded guilty in Magistrates’ Court to making a false report and driving while impaired by alcohol. The court heard that at 3.39am on April 22, police responded to a report of a collision on North Shore Road, near Harlem Heights Road. When they arrived, they discovered a car had crashed into a utility pole, but the driver had left the scene.A short while later, officers received a phone call from Virgil, reporting the vehicle stolen. The officers went to Virgil’s home to take a statement and noticed he appeared to have just taken a shower. He also smelled of alcohol and fresh bruises covered his arms.Asked about the bruises, he asked the officers: “What bruises are you talking about?”The officers searched Virgil’s room and found a pair of jeans on the ground with a set of keys in the pocket. When shown the keys, Virgil became belligerent and attempted to snatch the keys from the officers.Arrested, he said: “I was home all night. I haven’t been out.”Police investigating the matter learned the next day that Virgil was at the Bailey’s Bay Cricket Club just minutes before the crash. The defendant later called police and made a full confession. After pleading guilty, Virgil told the court: “I was frightened and didn’t know what to do. I have a bright future, and I don’t want to jeopardise my career.”Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner fined Virgil $1,000 for making a false report, and a further $800 for driving while impaired. He also banned him from driving all vehicles for a period of one year.
