A Bermudian mother of three broke down in tears when she was asked to recount the night her Devonshire home was invaded.Rhonda Wilkinson was the second witness called to the stand yesterday in the Supreme Court trial of three men charged in connection with the incident.Terrence Christopher, 21, Tyrone Pedro, 21 and Shayne James, 18, deny using an imitation firearm and a charge of aggravated burglary on April 2.Ms Wilkinson told the six-woman, six-man jury how she ran for her life, clutching her youngest son’s hand to get away from a machete-wielding assailant. The boy was ten years old when the incident occurred.Ms Wilkinson, who has lived in the three-bedroom apartment with her boyfriend and three children for just over a year, at one point was asked to speak up.Her voice trembled as she told how three men ran into her home to steal cash, jewellery, a PlayStation unit and one or two games. She said she was expecting someone to bring a kite for her youngest child on the night in question, which is why she opened the door without checking to see who was there. With tears streaming down her face, she told the court there was “a girl at the door who asked for someone”. “I told her I didn’t know anyone by the name she called, when the girl looked back over her shoulder I knew something wasn’t right, and so I tried to close the door.”“The girl pushed it back and that’s when three guys ran into the apartment, my son was standing behind me, the girl closed the door behind herself, she never came in.”Ms Wilkinson described the three men as tall, medium and short. “The tall guy told the one with the machete to shut me up, when the medium guy held up the machete I ran towards the kitchen holding my son’s hand and hid by the freezer.”“It seemed like forever but it was only about five to ten minutes, my dog was barking and all of a sudden the barking just stopped,” said Ms Wilkinson. “I told my son to stay put while I checked to see what was going on.“I crawled into the living room and that’s when my boyfriend came to look for me,” she said. The couple were at home with two children at the time of the incident. Ms Wilkinson’s oldest son was not at home when the incident occurred.Mr Wilkinson told Crown counsel Takiyah Burgess that all three men were wearing dark clothing with scarves covering their faces below the eyes. She said the eyes of one of the assailant’s stood out because they were a different colour, “a light colour, either hazel or green”.She said she didn’t know how much money was taken, the jewellery stolen was in her bedroom, the PlayStation unit and games were in the living room.Ms Wilkinson also noted that the machete looked new, like it had never been used; and she recalled it had a black and red handle. The first witness called to testify yesterday was the Forensic Support Unit officer who photographed and collected evidence.Christopher is represented by lawyer Charles Richardson, Elizabeth Christopher appears for James and Pedro is represented by Larry Mussenden.Puisne Judge Charlesetta Simmons is presiding, the trial resumes at 9.30am on Monday when Ms Wilkinson returns to the witness box for cross examination.
