Trial adjourned due to ‘bad odour’

A strong ‘paint-like’ smell in the courtroom forced an abrupt adjournment in the Supreme Court yesterday. The trial of three men charged in connection with a Devonshire home invasion on April 2, was due to resume after the lunch break at 2.30pm. Puisne Judge Charlesetta Simmons ended the day early however, due to the overwhelming odour that filled the courtroom. When contacted, Assistant Registrar Peter Miller confirmed that “some remedial work was being done in Sessions House which led to the bad odour”. “But this has now been taken care of and the trial will resume in the morning,” he said. The morning session yesterday saw testimony from a fourth witness, who testified that a gun was held to her head. Edwina Dowling, the cousin of Rhonda Wilkinson who lives at the Devonshire apartment that was raided, said she was in the bedroom watching television with Ms Wilkinson’s boyfriend when the incident occurred. Her testimony came on day three of the Supreme Court trial of Terrence Christopher and Tyrone Pedro, 22 and Shayne James, 19, who deny using an imitation firearm and aggravated burglary. She told the court that she looked out the window when she heard a knock on the door on the night in question. Ms Dowling said she recognised the girl at the door who was wearing a hooded jacket, but she did not know her personally.“I was sitting on the bed and a man came in the bedroom, he told me to stay there, then he put a gun up to my head. I saw another guy with a machete who was shouting at Cori, who gave him something off the dresser — I didn’t see what it was,” she said.“I didn’t get a good look at the gun, I just glanced at it. All I remember is that it was silver. He held it up to my right temple, I couldn’t really see what the man was wearing, I just saw the black mask covering everything on his face but his eyes.”Her testimony came after evidence-in-chief by Cori Broadbelt, Ms Wilkinson’s boyfriend who was cross examined before the six-woman, six-man jury briefly before legal arguments. The trial continues at 9.30am.
