Alleged drug dealers given permission to travel

A married couple charged last week with possessing cannabis with intent to supply, was back in Magistrates’ Court yesterday, having purchased one-way tickets to the United States.Tracey and Robert MacRonald of Pigeon Rock Lane, Pembroke were arrested shortly after they reported to the Hamilton Police Station yesterday morning.Crown counsel Susan Milligan told the court that someone tipped off the police with “reliable information” that the couple planned to leave Bermuda permanently to relocate to Paxton, Massachusetts.When questioned by police they admitted they had purchased one-way tickets to Boston to leave the Island with their nine-year-old child to see Mr MacRonald’s ailing father.The flight booked was scheduled to leave Bermuda at noon yesterday.Mr and Ms MacRonald were charged on Friday with two others, Susanne Jones of Pembroke and Blair Orlando, of Warwick. All four were released on $5,000 with one surety each by Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner.Mr MacRonald was further charged with possessing cannabis, a silver grinder, scissors and a digital scale.Mrs MacRonald, Ms Jones and Mr Orlando were charged with possessing cannabis on May 18.The case was set down for trial in Magistrates’ Court on April 5.Lawyer Dantae Williams, holding for Sade Subair, mitigated on the couple’s behalf.After lengthy submissions Mr Warner gave the couple two options.“I will grant you leave with $100,000 and a like surety each, on the understanding that the court be given specific dates when you plan to leave and return.”Alternatively, he said: “If you decide not to travel you must surrender your travel documents and sign bail for $20,000 with like sureties on the condition that you remain in this jurisdiction.”
