Teen burglar spends Christmas locked up

A 17-year-old burglar spent Christmas at the Co-ed Facility after he admitted stealing jewellery and electronics from two homes in Smith’s.Jarico Burt, of Hamilton Parish, appeared in Magistrates’ Court in custody on Monday charged with two counts of burglary.He admitted entering a home on Manor House Drive between 8.15am and 11pm on December 20 and stealing $2,575 of items including jewellery and an iPod.Burt also entered a home on Town Hill Road between 11pm on December 20 and 1.30am on December 21, where he stole electronics, wine and gift certificates valued at $4,760.Officers investigating the burglaries identified Burt as a possible suspect.He was arrested on December 21 after officers recognised him as a passenger in a car travelling through Flatts.A search found he had several items of jewellery, a BlackBerry phone and a gift certificate which he was unable to account for.The items were later identified as coming from the burgled homes in Smith’s.Burt admitted being involved in the burglaries with another person and took police to a laptop he’d stolen from the second home.A total of $700 worth of jewellery was recovered from the first burglary; $2,900 of items were recovered from the second.Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner ordered a Social Inquiry Report and remanded Burt into custody until February for sentencing.
