Man hit his ex-girlfriend after sleeping in her bed

A man who assaulted his ex-girlfriend after she caught him sleeping in her bed has been jailed pending sentence.Jamal Bascome, 27, of Sunset Close, Pembroke, admitted causing actual bodily harm to Merviena Simons on December 22.Magistrates’ Court heard that Ms Simons was out with friends on December 21 when she saw Bascome, her ex-boyfriend.She became concerned that he would follow her home and spent the night at a friend’s.She returned to her home in Sandys around 5.39pm the next day and found Bascome sleeping in her bed.Crown counsel Susan Mulligan said Ms Simons shouted at Bascome, waking him. He repeatedly told her to stop shouting, putting his hand over her mouth when she would not.He then slapped her and a fight broke out.Bascome repeatedly punched Ms Simons in the face and she continued to shout for help during the subsequent brawl. At one stage Bascome put his hand over her mouth, and Ms Simons bit it.A neighbour eventually heard the altercation and kicked in the door to assist.By the time police arrived at the scene, Bascome had already left. Ms Simons suffered a black eye and cuts to her face in the fight.Bascome was arrested and admitted slapping the victim.Duty counsel Oonagh Vaucrosson said that the defendant had anger issues, and that on this occasion alcohol had made him less able to control his emotions.“He had been in a relationship with Ms Simons for five months,” Ms Vaucrosson said. “They had argued that evening before and he came back to make amends.”Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner said that Bascome has a history of assaulting women and going into people’s houses at night.Bascome currently has a suspended sentence over his head in connection with a charge of prowling. He has been convicted of assaulting police, violently resisting arrest and breaching a domestic violence protection order.Mr Warner ordered a social inquiry report and remanded Bascome into custody until he can be sentenced in February.
