Teenagers remanded in custody over fight

Four teenagers were remanded in custody yesterday after being charged with a brutal attack involving a knife and a metal bat.

Corey Bean, of Sandys, Taj Brown, of Devonshire, and Jachael Gibson, of Warwick, all aged 19, and 18-year-old Azha Dowling, of Somerset, all pleaded not guilty to a charge of causing grievous bodily harm to Malachi Wales in an incident on November 30 last year.

Mr Brown and Mr Bean were further charged with an offence of causing grievous bodily harm to Frank Herbert on the same date, while Mr Dowling was charged with assaulting Mr Herbert with intent to rob him.

Mr Gibson was further charged possessing a bladed article, a 12in knife, in a public place and Mr Bean was charged with having an offensive weapon, a baseball bat.

Mr Brown and Mr Gibson alone face charges of using threatening gestures.

The four defendants have denied all of the charges against them.

Crown counsel Larissa Burgess told the court that the group allegedly set upon the two complainants, kicking, punching and striking the victims with weapons.

Duty counsel Oonagh Vaucrosson told the court that all four defendants work part time and are trying to better themselves.

Mr Dowling, she said, is working on his GED, while Mr Bean is involved with Raleigh Bermuda. She also told the court that Mr Brown is taking business management courses at Bermuda College, while Mr Gibson is a father-to-be.

Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner however noted that all four defendants have previous offences, and that Mr Bean, Mr Brown and Mr Gibson are all currently on probation.

He denied the defendants bail, remanding all four into custody at the Co-ed Facility. The matter is expected to return to Magistrates’ Court in April.
