Teen admits spate of burglaries

A Pembroke teen was remanded yesterday after he was found with gloves, a crowbar and a knife.Officers found Marcus Tucker, 18, on Syline Drive in Smith’s where residents had recently reported a series of burglaries. The Fourth Avenue resident pleaded guilty in Magistrates’ Court to possessing a bladed article, and having equipment for use in burglary.Prosecutor Carrington Mahoney said officers were patrolling the Smith’s neighbourhood on Friday, following break-ins there. They stopped two men on a motorcycle around 1.20pm, and asked what they were doing in the area.Tucker said they were just out for a drive but his pillion passenger said they were visiting a female friend in the area. The officers searched both men because of the different stories.Nothing of interest was found on the pillion passenger, but a pair of leather gloves and a flik-knife with a 4” blade were found in Tucker’s pants pockets. Two more pairs of gloves and a crowbar were among items found on the bike itself.Tucker said he forgot he had the knife and didn’t know there was a crowbar in the bike’s seat.“That’s not my bike,” he said. “We weren’t doing anything wrong. We weren’t breaking into no one’s house or nothing. I think this is just because of me, what I look like and how I carry myself.”Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo noted that Tucker was already on probation and has a suspended sentence looming over his head for a past offence. He adjourned the matter until next week for sentencing, and remanded Tucker into custody until then.
