Magistrate orders trial in case of man who allegedly threatened wife
A man who allegedly threatened to kill his wife if she ever returned to Bermuda from the Dominican Republic was released on $2,000 bail yesterday pending a trial in Magistrates’ Court.Devonshire resident Edward Robinson, 39, initially admitted that he committed intimidating acts via the telephone during the month of May, but after jurisdictional questions regarding the law Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner opted to record a not guilty plea. The court heard that Natalia Robinson was allegedly threatened over the telephone by her Bermudian husband of three years. One of the messages allegedly said “come to Bermuda I’m going to kill you, I see you in Bermuda you’re f***ing dead, I’ll f***ing kill you”.Crown counsel Susan Mulligan explained in court that the alleged threats were made in a phone call to Mrs Robinson while she was in the Dominican Republic. Ms Mulligan noted that the maximum penalty for the offence is 12 months’ imprisonment.Mr Warner questioned whether the matter fell within the jurisdiction of Bermuda’s courts, noting that “the acts relate to a party who wasn’t in the jurisdiction”. He discounted the guilty plea and filed a plea of not guilty. The case was set down for trial on August 19 and the defendant was released on $2,000 bail.
