Men cleared of 2012 Mission Lane shooting

Four men charged in connection with a 2012 shooting were yesterday found not guilty of all charges.Jahkeil Samuels, 27, Jamin Saltus, 22, Ronniko Burchall, 24, were each found not guilty of causing grievous bodily harm and using a firearm to commit an indictable offence.The charges relate to an incident near a Mission Lane home on February 29, 2012, in which a Pembroke man, who cannot be identified for legal reasons, was shot in the buttock after stepping out of a party to urinate.Meanwhile Alex Vanderpool, 22, was found not guilty of handling a firearm on the evening of February 28, 2012.Mr Samuels is from St David’s, while the other defendants reside in Pembroke. All four had maintained their innocence throughout the proceedings.Mr Samuels, Mr Saltus and Mr Burchall were originally charged with attempted murder, but Puisne Judge Stephen Hellman downgraded the charge and ordered the jury to find the defendants not guilty of attempted murder.After a six-week trial the matter was sent to the jury yesterday, who found the defendants not guilty of all charges.As the verdicts were read, friends and family of the defendants were heard expressing their relief.Outside, the defendants were warmly embraced by their supporters, with one family member saying: “Thank God.”
