Student jailed for gun offence

A Bermudian college student who imported two BB guns was yesterday sentenced to two weeks in jail.Customs officers at LF Wade International Airport found two dismantled Colt Automatic .25 calibre in Shaquille Crockwell’s luggage when he returned from his studies in Rhode Island on April 22.Various pieces of the guns were found in several parts of the bag and inside items of clothing, Magistrates’ Court was told earlier this month.Officers were later able to piece the parts together to form two fully-functioning BB guns.Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner remanded the 21-year-old Hamilton Parish resident into custody while a social inquiry report was carried out.Yesterday he ruled that the two weeks Crockwell had already spent in jail were sufficient penalty for the offence.Crockwell’s father, Trevor Crockwell, 53, was present for the ruling.“I’m just glad it’s over,” he said. “Even though were able to visit Shaquille and talk to him, it has been stressful, but it’s all over.”Asked if his son would be able to continue his education in the US, Mr Crockwell was uncertain“He’s got to work out something with the courts I guess.”
