MAWI patient sexually assaults girl on bus
A 35-year-old Mid Atlantic Wellness Institute patient yesterday admitted sexually assaulting a teenage girl on a bus.Kevin Rubaine kept putting his hand on the 17-year-old’s right thigh as they rode the bus on July 25, Magistrates’ Court heard.Crown Counsel Cindy Clarke said the teen, who cannot be named for legal reasons, first thought Rubaine lost his balance as the bus turned a corner. She became fearful for her safety when Rubaine kept touching her.The teenager thought the Pembroke resident would harm her if she complained so she contacted her mother to meet her at an upcoming bus stop instead. The girl’s mother then had the bus driver call the police.Rubaine yesterday apologised to the court: “I’m sorry for what happened. I don’t know what to else tell you. I won’t do anything like that again your honour.”His lawyer, Jaymo Durham said: “Mr Rubaine does have a history of mental illness. It is uncertain as to what his condition was at the time of the offence. He is an outpatient and is on medication.”Mr Warner adjourned the matter to August 12 and remanded Rubaine into custody at Westgate until then.
