MAWI outpatient admits intruding on a girl’s privacy

A 29-year-old Smiths man admitted to intruding on the privacy of a young girl.Robert Branco, of Queen’s Lane, was charged in Magistrates’ Court in relation to a July 17 incident involving a teenage girl.Prosecutor Susan Mulligan said that Branco introduced himself to the victim at Harbour Nights after he spoke to a mutual acquaintance in the group the victim was with.Ms Mulligan told the court that although the victim declined to give Branco her name, he continued speaking to her.Branco asked the victim if she had a boyfriend, then told her his age and said he was single if she was interested.He then repeatedly tried to put his arm around the victim’s waist and neck. The victim pulled away each time.Ms Mulligan said Branco grabbed the victim’s bra strap through her shirt. The victim told him to let go of her bra strap and leave her alone twice, at which point Branco let go.The victim then went into a store to escape.Branco’s defence lawyer, Peter Farge, told the court that Branco has a history of mental problems and is currently a MAWI outpatient. Mr Farge said Branco apologises to the girl for the incident.Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner adjourned the case until October 9 for sentencing. Branco’s bail with electronic monitoring was extended.
