Sandys teen denies two counts of burglary

A Sandys teen was remanded into custody yesterday after stolen items were discovered in his bedroom.Tyler Christopher, 17, denied two counts of burglary and alternate counts of receiving stolen goods, specifically an iPad and iPod Touch, which were believed to be stolen from two separate Pembroke homes. The iPad has been linked to a robbery which took place on October 10, while the iPod Touch has been linked to a burglary on October 14, but prosecutors said Mr Christopher and others are being investigated in connection to a series of many as 20 burglaries.Crown counsel Susan Mulligan told the court that police acted on a search warrant at the defendants home at around 7am on Wednesday where they seized a number of items which are believed to be linked in a series of burglaries. She also noted that a second individual is in custody in connection to the offences, and asked for the defendant to be remanded until Monday at which point the Crown may bring forward additional charges.Defence lawyer Saul Dismont told the court that Mr Christopher should be released on bail because he had already been held in police custody since 6.45am on Wednesday when they were only allowed to do so for 48 hours at most.As a result, Mr Dismont said the court had no power to hold the defendant further as it would be extending the unlawful detention.“After 48 hours, the limit ends,” he said. “They have breached the law in terms of the period he could be kept for. He should have been brought to court by [Thursday] afternoon.”However Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo responded that the court’s jurisdiction begins only when the defendant is brought to court, and he was not pursuaded by Mr Dismont’s argument. He denied Mr Christopher bail for the time being, remanding the defendant into custody at the Co-Ed Facility, but said the matter of bail would be revisited on Monday.
