USAF airman fined for impaired driving after crash

A United States Air Force serviceman today admitted driving over the legal alcohol limit when he crashed his cycle.

David Sutherland, 29, from Florida, was fined $1,500 for the offence in Magistrates’ Court yesterday.

Police were called out to a single vehicle crash in Somerset around 11pm Monday night, at the junction of Somerset Road and Cambridge Road.

Sutherland and his livery cycle were found lying in the road.

A subsequent breath analysis showed Sutherland had 145 milligrams of alcohol in 100 millilitres of his blood, almost twice the legal limit, which is 80.

Sutherland, who said he was “just passing through” Bermuda, apologised to the court.

Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner ordered the fines be paid forthwith and disqualified him from driving all vehicles in Bermuda for 12 months.
