Helmetless rider ends up with $2,000 in fines

Driving without a helmet ended in nearly $2,000 worth of fines in Magistrates’ Court for a Warwick man.

Jaciano Wade, 20, of Dunscombe Road, admitted a string of offences on December 19 — which started when police on mobile patrol on South Road, Warwick spotted him riding a motorcycle with no helmet.

Crown counsel Garret Byrne told the court officers saw Wade exit onto Cobbs Hill Road, ignoring a clearly marked stop sign, at which point they activated their siren.

The court heard that Wade looked back, saw officers, and accelerated — but eventually stopped and was arrested.

Police noticed Wade’s eyes were glazed, and said he was “clearly under the influence of alcohol” — but Wade refused to provide a sample of breath at Hamilton Police Station.

Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo fined him $100 for failing to wear protective headgear, and the same for ignoring a traffic sign and failing to stop for police.

For driving while impaired, Wade was ordered to pay $1,500 — as well as being banned from the road for a year and a half.
