Teenage burglar freed on appeal

A teen burglar has been freed on appeal after spending more than a year in jail

Jarico Burt, 18, of Hamilton Parish, was sentenced to corrective training at the Co-ed Facility in December 2012 for his involvement in two counts of burglary.

Burt had pleaded guilty to two December 20 burglaries from Smith’s residences on Manor House Drive and Town Hill Road, in which electronics, jewellery and other items worth more than $7,000 were taken.

Police detained him on December 21, 2012 after spotting him in a car passing through Flatts. A search uncovered jewellery, a BlackBerry phone and a gift certificate which he was unable to account for.

According to defence lawyer Kamal Worrell, the prosecution in Magistrates’ Court had originally called for a one year sentence.

At a January 31 appeal, Puisne Judge Stephen Hellman quashed the sentence, which had been given without setting a maximum period of detainment.

Corrective training sentences normally run from nine months to a maximum of three years, but Burt’s jail time was never specified.

Burt was freed from custody on Thursday by Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo.
