Man jailed after missing day in court

A man has gone to jail for ten days over unpaid fines and an old cannabis charge.

Keedai Astwood, 22, of the Railway Trail in Southampton, denied assaulting Cleve Wilson on April 8 in Pembroke with the intention of robbing him.

Appearing in Magistrates’ Court, Mr Astwood also denied an alternate charge of unlawful assault against the man.

Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo granted bail of $5,000, but noted that the defendant hadn’t appeared in court on December 11 to face the drug charge, and remanded him until April 27.

Mr Tokunbo also told him he had four warrants for outstanding fines: two $500 fines, one for $238 and one for $200.

He ordered Mr Astwood to pay them forthwith or get 50 days’ imprisonment.
