Man jailed for prowling, entering guesthouse

A 50-year-old man has been given a six-month prison sentence for prowling and repeatedly entering Little Pomander Guest House without lawful excuse. Carlos Astwood, of no fixed abode, pleaded guilty to three counts of entering the premises at 16 Pomander Road and one count of prowling in the same area, although he told magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo that he was “guilty with explanation”, claiming he had previously “stayed” at the guesthouse.

He was given six months in prison for each count to run concurrently.

The court heard that between February 15 and 28, Astwood entered the Paget guesthouse without lawful excuse and committed the same offence on April 22 and April 28. Then between February 15 and 28, he was prowling in the area.

Prosecutor Loxley Ricketts described several “strange” occurrences over the time frame. Mr Astwood was said to have removed lightbulbs, used the shower facilities and was said to be in possession of a set of keys for the guesthouse, which led the housekeeper to change some locks on the lower level of the building.

Speaking to the judge, Astwood said he didn’t consider his actions as prowling to which Mr Tokunbo replied, “the law does”.

He was ordered to stay away from the property on completion of his jail sentence.
